Canongate Technology

Canongate was formed in 1982, having previously been responsible as part of the Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Engineering Division, for the total engineering of the Brewery Group's control and automation facilities. Canongate has technology such as non-intrusive ultrasonics, permeable membranes and in-line spectrophotometry, this instrument range has provided unique solutions to process measurement problems in the Brewing, Distilling and Soft Drinks Industries world wide.

Carbo-check: The Carbo-Check sensor features a silicone rubber membrane through which the dissolved CO2 permeates into a sealed, evacuated chamber. The partial pressure of the gas is then measured and displayed by the analyser/control unit as a CO2 content. The system incoporates a vacuum exhauster to regularly evacuate the sensor, providing continual, accurate measurement of dissolved CO2. The analyser/control unit can be linked to a carbonation system to enable fully integrated CO2 measurement, injection and control.

Densi-check: The Densi-check operates entirely non-intrusively, through the use of a small composite ultrasonic transducer mounted on the outside of the pipe. The transducer includes a resistance thermometer automatically compensating for variations in temperature. Ultrasonic pulses are sent across the pipe, the time for an echo to be received varying according to the liquid and its concentration. These signals are then fed into the Control Unit, which calculates the concentration of the chosen component in the liquid being measured.

Level-check: The Level-check operates similarly to the Densi-check except the ultrasonic transducer is mounted at the bottom of the vessel and on the side, where it acts as a reference transducer. The reference transducer will automatically compensate for variations in temperature and density, so re-calibration is not needed. Signals are fed into the Control Unit via daisy-chained processors. The Control Unit calculates the height and volume of the liquid from the time taken for the signal echo to be received and displays the results on an LCD screen.

Spot-check: Spot-check is a level switch for use in liquid applications where it uses an ultrasonic "footprint" to determine the presence or absence of liquid inside a tank or pipe. The piezo-electric transducer emits ultrasonic energy into the wall of the tank or pipe, which acts as a wave-guide. The electronics detect the difference between "wet", "dry" and "fault" condition.

Embra-OxyCheck: Embra-Check has been designed specifically for hygienic applications where the need is for reliable and accurate measurement at low levels of dO2. As oxygen diffuses through the membrane onto the cathode, where it reacts chemically and then combines with the anode. This chemical process develops an electric current. Which once converted into a voltage is displayed on the integral LCD on the panel.

Embra COBlend: The Embra COBlend is designed for the accurate control of blending beer and water, with subsequent carbonation. This system provides the tightest possible control over these parameters both in-line and in destination tank. The blending package addresses the problems of layering in tanks and water addition from pre-coating of the filter.

Embra MultiCheck: MultiCheck is designed for the combined measurement of CO2 and Brix in soft drinks packaging lines or CO2 and alcohol/Plato in beer (normally packaging lines). MultiCheck uses the combination of DensiCheck and CarboCheck measurement technique and an ultrasonic transducer connected to one control and display unit.
